What is YouTube?

YouTube is an American video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California. The service was created by three former PayPal employees-Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Javed Karim, in February 2005. Google bought the site in November 2006 for $1.65 billion; YouTube now operates as one of Google's subsidiaries. YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. It offers a wide range of user and corporate videos.

Content available includes video clips, TV show clips, music videos, short films and documentaries, audio recordings, film trailers, live broadcasts, and other content such as video blogs, short original videos, and educational videos.

In 2011, YouTube introduced the ability to create live broadcasts in the beta version. Subsequently, this feature left beta testing and became a full-fledged part of the service. Broadcasts can be both deleted and saved on the channel. At the moment when the live broadcast continues, viewers have the opportunity to talk to each other in a unique chat.

On, users can upload videos in several standard formats, including MPEG and AVI. YouTube automatically converts them to Flash Video using the proprietary H.264 codec and codecs for the WebM format, making them available for online viewing. Outside of, each video is accompanied by several dedicated sites that can download videos from YouTube. Since January 2009, YouTube has been able to download some videos directly from the site. It is possible to save without the help of third-party applications.

The saved video is placed in the browser's cache (if the video is large, only the part that was checked last may be in the cache; as a rule, this does not happen with videos lasting less than 15 minutes).
