Compression of media

Losslessly codable audio codec

OptimFROG is a lossless audio codec with additional hybrid lossless/lossless encoding. It comes with a free (closed source) command line encoder/decoder, plugins for multiple players and interface processing, and an SDK for use in other applications.

OptimFROG is a lossless audio compression program. Its main goal is to reduce, at maximum, the size of audio files while permitting bit identical restoration for all input. It is similar to ZIP compression but highly specialized to compress audio data. Encoders for hybrid "DualStream" format and for floating point audio are included in the distributions in separate executable files.

More about this excellent application

OptimFROG generally provides the best possible lossless audio compression ratios. It has full-featured input plugins for Windows Media Player, foobar2000, Winamp 2/3/5, dBpowerAMP, XMPlay, QCD, XMMS, and many other audio players. Also, OptimFROG support for all integer PCM waveforms up and expandable streaming (error-resistant) compressed format. Self-extracting (SFX) archives can also be created with a small overhead of just 173kB. The compression rate that can be achieved with OptimFROG is typically between 25% (quiet classical music) and 70% (loud rock music) of the original audio file size. This is less than about 13% obtained with high-quality MP3 files (~176 kbps), but you have the advantage that you can archive and listen to perfect copies of your original music.

Why download OptimFROG Lossless Audio Compressor for Windows 64-bit?

OptimFROG is a codec that gives priority to compression size, sacrificing speed. Its highest presets are compressed to smaller file sizes than any other end-user codec, perhaps except for (legacy/unsupported) La. These presets are resource-intensive for decoding and encoding, sometimes ten times more than faster presets, where OptimFrog compresses Monkey's Audio "Extra High" speed and achieves compression ratios such as Monkey's "High ."

OptimFROG uses a new audio compression technology, the concept of generalized stereo decoding (together with an optimum predictor), which was first introduced in OptimFROG 4.0b in December 2001. At its introduction, the new technology provided significantly better (~1.5%) compression than existing lossless audio compressors. Positioning itself perhaps at one of the extreme compromises between size and CPU load, it has a relatively small user base - and unlike the most notable codecs, there appears to be no third-party decoder and no sign of reverse engineering the FFmpeg format.
