Many newbies choose FL Studio for Windows because of its ease of use. The program has a user-friendly interface, but you need to get used to it. After installing and starting the program, you will see the FL Studio workspace with several windows. Most can be moved, scaled, zoomed in, or zoomed out if necessary. If you accidentally lose a window, you can find it by pressing the desired icon on the toolbar or its hotkey.

Program interface

The interface of FL Studio for Windows has the following elements:

Toolbar Panel

At the top of the workspace, there is the FL Studio toolbar to access all its commands and parameters. On the left is the main menu with 8 sections: File, Edit, Add, Patterns, View, Options, Tools, and Help. This is the central panel where you can find all the essential program options.

Browser

The File Browser lets you access projects, samples, presets, and plugin libraries. You can also preview available models here. Three tabs display all folders, the contents of the current project with the history of its changes, and a database of plugins. Downloading from the browser is done by dragging and dropping the necessary items to compatible locations in FL Studio.

Playlist

The playlist organizes all the elements of the final structure of the song. It is the sequencer where the FL Studio user creates the arrangement. The playlist window is a stack of multipurpose tracks containing the pattern, audio, and automation clips.

Unlike most other sequencers, the playlist tracks in FL Studio are not linked to any specific instruments, audio recordings, or clip types. You can place clips anywhere you like and even overlay them on top of each other. The clips work like notes in Piano Roll (it will be mentioned later). When playback reaches a clip, FL Studio plays all of its content. It is also worth noting that clip tracks are not linked to mixer channels, and the instruments used in the clip are routed from the Channel Rack.

Channel Rack

This window has all the instruments, automation, samples, and other components of the project. It also determines the volume and the panorama of each of them and assigns a mixer channel where they are sent for further effects processing and tuning. The data visible on the channel is also known as patterns. Patterns can consist of scores recorded in the Piano Roll, step sequences, and controller motions stored as automation events. Patterns can consist of several instruments at once. Patterns created in the Channel Rack are delivered as clips to the playlist.

Piano Roll

According to many producers working in DAW, FL Studio for Windows surpasses its competitors in terms of convenience. Note data can be entered manually or recorded with a MIDI controller. Piano Roll sends notes and automation data to related plugins. The vertical axis contains the notes, and the horizontal axis includes the time grid. You can select the resolution of the scaled grid and create complex compositions.

Mixer

All audio data in FL Studio for Windows goes into the mixer. The mixer has 125 Insert tracks for incoming signals from plugins and external audio sources, one current channel to accommodate utility instruments like Edison and Wave Cande and a master track for processing with master effects. When a new audio source is added, it is automatically sent to the master track if it is not routed manually. Note the difference between mixing and mastering. When creating a new project, go to the mixer window and make sure the Fruity Limiter compressor is turned off (it can be put on the master track initially).

The mixer window has a bar of unique effects for each channel on the right side. The slots located horizontally assign effects, such as equalizers, compressors, reverbs, etc., to make the instrument unique, cut off unnecessary frequencies, and make your track sound the way you want it to sound. Click on the arrow to the left of the slot number to add an effect. Each slot has a round controller responsible for the level of the impact.
