Survive in a radioactive wasteland
Fallout 4 is a full-fledged sequel to Action-RPG 3, released in 2015. A devastating nuclear war ravaged the world, and those who were luckier than others took refuge in special shelters where they spent much time in isolation. According to the tradition of the Fallout series, you have to play as an inhabitant of such an asylum, exploring the post-apocalyptic world full of dangers and completing different quests. We will tell you more about this game.
What is this game?
Fallout 4 is a sequel to the famous post-apocalyptic series, where the events unfold several years after the end of Fallout 3. The only survivor from Vault 11, located near Boston, becomes the protagonist of the game. By the will of fate, the protagonist has to leave his home to start an adventure full of dangers, such as mutants, raiders, mercenaries, and different natural dangers.
The fourth part of the series differs from its predecessors by the new location, Boston, its surroundings, and by some changes in the game mechanics. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. role system has been redesigned, and the protagonist has learned to modify weapons and rebuild war-torn settlements. A symbol of the game, power armor, is no longer a cure-all. It requires the use of nuclear batteries to wear it. The dialogue system has also been redesigned. In the fourth part, most quests can be completed without entering into battle with the characters.
Storyline
The world changed forever after the invention of nuclear weapons. Many people thought that the times of World War II would be the most influential and the most terrible imprint on the body of the Earth, but the further use of nuclear energy by the government led to a more significant crisis.
There is 2077, an unsettling time, as the protagonist finds out that the world war is coming where nuclear warheads will be used. The Vault-Tec corporation offers people like you the to save their lives in the equipped Vault 111. After agreeing to the terms, you and your family put yourself in cryosleep and then wake up in a new world years later.
Gameplay
The character is created by choosing gender, appearance, and the distribution of performance points on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system.
Then the adventure begins. You can immediately notice the significant innovation compared to the 3rd part. This is a first-person shooter where the developers adapted the turn-based elements from the first parts through the V.A.T.S. system. It allows you to aim at your enemies in slow motion to select the vulnerable spots. They are marked as a percentage of marksmanship: the higher the index, the more chances you have to hit and take health. In the previous parts, V.A.T.S. stops time entirely, but in the 4th part, it slows it down.
Traveling still depends on your reputation, which increases due to good deeds and helps and decreases due to murder and theft. While exploring the wastelands, you will face various characters, but their design is worsened noticeably. Some will become quest masters, others will buy or sell valuable items, and the rest of the characters will join you. With the latter, you will be able to equip your shelter as you like (this is another innovation).
In the previous parts, building bases was impossible, so all fans of Survival projects will appreciate this element. Construction depends on the number of supplies, resources, and the number of workers. Workers are the survivors who should be assigned to different positions. Special attention is paid to the economy, so bottle caps are now needed not only for your supply.
The system of skills and perks has been improved noticeably. Bethesda has also improved the combat system and the interaction with your companions. The latter have become immortal and are now very useful in traveling through the wasteland. Companions help you carry your items, communicate, and react to your actions during battles. After a few dozen hours of running around the asylum, you will discover a different Fallout that may be unattractive. Players face four factions with different worldviews. Hundreds of hours can be spent leisurely exploring the locations.
Freedom of choice
In Fallout 4, you can choose one of the four factions to join. You can even work for each of them unscrupulously. This is the world where you are the creator of your destiny. You can spend hundreds of hours building your settlement, growing a garden, and even falling in love, and no one will say a word against you.
You can also choose a path of war, such as clearing the dungeons, being aggressive, or destroying anyone who looks unfriendly. You can even kill some key heroes. The game allows you to choose from limitless possible actions and tasks.
Characters
From the beginning of the game, you create a unique character. The constructor allows you to explore the world with a character who looks just like anyone else by appearance and behavior.
Your actions and how you communicate with the rest of the world determine the attitude of the other heroes toward you. Even your companions react when you do something that is against their principles. Dogmeat is the only exception. He loves you wholeheartedly when you feed the entire settlement and perform a merciless massacre. You can receive valuable items from each of your companions.
If you miss letting someone join you during side quests or the primary storylines, you may no longer get the chance to travel with that particular companion. The most exciting companions and their descriptions are presented below:
A super mutant Strong. This is a big man with more than a dozen powers and an impressive size. You can join him during Rex Goodman's quests. He brings meat to the main character once a day. This character is a bit silly but amusing enough. He is touchingly happy when you show outright aggression;
Nick Valentine. This synth is instrumental when walking around the wasteland. He's good at hacking terminals, shoots well, and tells a rather exciting story when communicating. Unlike many other characters, he is charming as a companion and does not annoy you during the long walkthrough. The possibility of choosing him as a companion appears after the search in the Kellog's house;
Cosworth. This is a robotic butler of the protagonist's family. He is armed with a flamethrower, and a circular saw is kind, and has strong principles. He can't stand it when the hero tries to profit from someone or break the law. Cosworth is annoying, so you should choose it only after thinking twice. If you decide to take Cosworth, you can do it after the quest in Concord. Instead of Codsworth, you can take the robot Curie who is also a medic;
Dogmeat. The most loyal companion you can imagine. He will leave only if you want him to. This your friend can be sent for valuable things and can also immobilize enemies in combat. There is a certain romance in traveling with a dog through a radiation-contaminated world.
Crafting system
The modification and crafting system make the fourth part special. You can take anything apart. If you find any junk, don't rush to throw it away. If you still don't want to keep it with you, sell it.
Trade is quite well developed. You can upgrade some perks and skills for its more successful implementation. Some types of armor can give a tremendous advantage when trying to do more favorable exchanges. Any trader will be pleased to exchange with an intelligent hero rather than a guy in power armor and a grenade launcher.
The top armor is available almost from the beginning of the game. In the previous parts, it was available at the end of the game, and it wasn't easy to get it. In Fallout 4, the developers presented the armor at the very beginning. However, it would be best to have nuclear batteries to power armor. If they suddenly run out, you must get out of your armor train and face the dangers.
Over time, you can add more and more details to your armor and weapons. You can fight with one type of weapon throughout the game, gradually improving it.

- Intelligent changes to improve game systems
- Still lots of bugs
- Iffy AI
- Bases feel like unnecessary busy work at times
