Must have for novice indie developers

Unity for Mac is a cross-platform game development environment. It lets you create applications on more than 20 operating systems, including personal computers, game consoles, mobile devices, and Internet applications. Unity was released in 2005 and had constantly been developing since then. Unity is used both by large developers and independent studios. We will tell you what Unity is and its pros and cons.

What is this program?

Unity is a game development engine and platform with various tools making your work easier. It consists of a visual editor, a code editor, and a scripting tool (object behavior logic). It allows you to make changes and test the results in real time. The program has tools for creating exact 3D copies of natural objects and spaces (rooms, buildings, and open areas).

Primary program features

  • Unity for Mac provides a complete physical model of the interactions between objects in the virtual scene to free the developer from having to figure out how each of the elements behaves;

  • Unity has a built-in physics engine. It consists of laws and rules of interaction between scene elements and the environment. The library has numerous presets with different settings of world physics to load into the project and change;

  • Imitation of physical phenomena and particle-based objects (atmospheric precipitation, fire, or reflections) is performed using Nvidia PhysX development;

  • The physics side of the engine includes the physics of hard and soft bodies, such as cloth, hair, wool, and fluids. A property inheritance system makes child objects copy the properties and behavior of their parents. Scripts are attached to each of them separately.

Engine features

Projects in Unity are represented by tiers, stored in separate files on a disc along with a set of scripts, objects, components, and parameters of the latter two. Multiple scene components can have the same name, be tagged, and be organized by layer.

The platform supports various formats, audio materials, textures, and scripts. The latter can be exported for use in other objects or compressed into a single file. The real-time scene and object visualization engine displays on-the-fly change.

A library of ready-to-use digital objects allows you to import and export assets, such as fragments of scenes and scripts of character and object behavior, moving them between projects without programming. This is how blanks for similar games are made.

Why is this platform so good?

Unity for Mac has the following benefits:

  • A functional graphical editor;

  • A cross-platform development environment allows you to adapt the project for any platform by making minimal changes;

  • Plug-in support: the ability to install components for expanding capabilities and increasing the convenience and speed of working with the environment;

  • Modularity: allows you to construct packages of elements in a single game scene;

  • Advanced methodology of object creation: instead of inheritance by placing the object into a tree structure, they are combined into functional blocks to simplify the prototyping stage;

  • Use of the high-level C# language with various ready-made solutions.
