A fun game to pass the time
StepMania is a cross-platform rhythm video game and engine. It was initially developed as a clone of Konami's Dance Dance Revolution arcade game series and has evolved into an extensible rhythm game engine capable of supporting different rhythm-based games. StepMania is free and open-source software. Several video game series use StepMania as their game engine. Stepmania is a free and open-source music game.
The dance and rhythm platform challenges players to press the arrow keys at the right time, which often corresponds to the notes in the song that is currently playing. The game has gained a significant number of players because of its wide range of customization options and support for various hardware. Stepmania is a simpler alternative to Osu! or Audition Online, as there's nothing special about it other than the genre's standard dropping notes in the form of arrows and a score counter.
Development
StepMania was initially developed as an open-source clone of Konami's arcade game series Dance Revolution (DDR). The interface was based mainly on the DDR interface in the first three significant versions. At first, new versions were released relatively quickly, culminating in version 3.9 in 2005. In 2010, after almost five years without a stable release, StepMania creator Chris Dunford forked the 2006 StepMania build, halted development on the bleeding edge branch, and named the new addition StepMania 4 beta. A separate development team called the Spinal Shark Collective forked the bleeding-edge branch and continued work on it, calling it sm-SSC. On May 30, 2011, sm-SSC received official status and was renamed StepMania 5.0. The development of a future version, 5.1, has been quiet for the past few years after several beta versions were released on GitHub.
