Free (GPL) productivity software for Mac
MacDjView is a popular, free (GPL) Mac program created by Windjview. Since it was added to our selection of programs and applications in 2012, it has received 26,529 downloads; last week, it had 20 downloads. This program is available for users with Mac OS X and previous versions and is only available in English. Its current version is 0.1.2, and it was updated on 17/06/2012. MacDjView is a handy program that requires less storage space than many other programs.
MacDjView is a continuously scrolling DjVu viewer. It uses the free DjVuLibre library to decode DjVu documents. DjVu is a web-based format and software platform for document and image distribution. MacDjView offers a solution for viewing DjVu types of formats.
DjVu is a document format similar to PDF in many ways but superior for its high compression ratio. MacDjView is nothing but a mac-version of the rather popular windows application WinDjView, which is a fast and compact program for viewing DJVU files. The project was born and started to develop on the Windows platform, which is why WinDjView has already reached version 1.0.3 while MacDjView is stuck at 0.1.2. The difference in versions will cause different functionality, but even with the existing set of features, MacDjView allows you to view any DJVU files on your Mac without problems.
However, it has an intuitive interface with buttons for viewing the document. In addition, you can change the page layout to single or continuous, as well as rotate the document (left and right). Since DjVu format implies high quality of image and text, MacDjView offers users zoom-in and zoom-out functions to explore all the subtleties of the document. There is the support of hotkeys for fast adjustment of the document to the window size: fix page, actual size, fit by width, stretch. MacDjView is intuitive to use, but at this stage, it lacks features. Users cannot search for open documents and select and copy text fragments.
Why download MacDjView on Mac?
If you regularly work with scanned documents, DjVu is probably your preferred format, and MacDjView should provide essential tools for reading this type of document. The application is in the early stages of development and has room for improvement. With this tool, you could open different DjVu files: with and without images. There was no way to select or copy text or images in both scenarios. At this point, MacDjView focuses on displaying DjVu content rather than interacting with it like other similar applications.
