A software platform for transferring digital documents
What is DjVu?
DjVu is a set of compression technologies, a file format, and a software platform for transferring digital documents, scanned documents, and high-resolution images over the Internet. DjVu documents load, display highly quickly and look the same on all platforms without compatibility issues due to fonts, colors, etc. DjVu is an excellent alternative to PDF and PostScript for digital documents, TIFF for scanned bitonal documents, JPEG and JPEG2000 for photos and drawings, and GIF for large palette images.
DjVu is the only web format suitable for distributing high-resolution color-scanned documents. No other format is even close. DjVu can be seen as an excellent complement to PNG and MNG (which, unlike DjVu, are lossless formats) in the document image and lossy photo compression. DjVuPhoto is a bit older but close in spirit to JPEG-2000. It is on par with JPEG-2000 in image quality and file size but differs favorably in rendering time and memory requirements. DjVuBitonal is about 3-10 times better than MMR/GroupIV.
What does DjVu offer?
Typical DjVu file sizes are two-tone scanned documents per page with a resolution of 300 dpi.
Color scanned documents: 30-100 Kb per page with a resolution of 300 dpi.
Photos: 2 times smaller than JPEG, about the same as JPEG-2000, but the decoder/renderer is progressive and has minimal memory requirements.
Paletted images: 2 times smaller than GIFs.
Digital documents: 1-3 times smaller than PDF or gzipped PS (depending on the number of images)
Rendering, page flipping, zooming, and panning are incomparably fast
Improved visual quality (smoothed text, etc.)
Why download it to the Mac?
The Mac versions of the program/insert, free compressors for Windows, and high-end commercial compressors and OCR engines are available from LizardTech Inc. The compressors shown here are slower and create larger files (sometimes with lower image quality) than commercial compressors, but they get the job done. For those who like quick solutions without installing software, various free web conversion services are available, including Any2DjVu and Bib2Web.
LizardTech management was enlightened enough to release a reference implementation of DjVu under the GNU GPL in October 2000. DjVuLibre is an improved version of this code maintained by the original inventors of DjVu. It is compatible with version 3.5 of LizardTech's DjVu software suite. Even more importantly, all the images in DjVu format are rendered quickly and can be smoothly scaled and panned.
- Allows you to customize the display and interface for the best viewing experience
